Hackney Mosaic Project open day

WATCH: The mosaic project giving people a holiday from their heads

A mosaic project has given people struggling with addiction and mental illness the chance to escape their day-to-day lives.

The Hackney-based project was started in 2011 by mosaicist Tessa Hunkin and is made up of volunteers, many of whom have been referred by recovery services.

The project relies on selling volunteer work at open days as catering for such a diverse range of people means it’s hard to secure council grants.

Hunkin said the project is currently creating a mosaic panel of birds for an estate in Hoxton, and also has plans to work with a local vet.

Sessions run every Wednesday, Friday, and alternate Saturday afternoons from 2-5pm in the Pavilion at Hackney Downs.
