WATCH: Inside the Hackney Right to Grow scheme

As part of a national campaign now supported by the council, Hackney residents are rallying to build a community and grow fresh produce for the borough using previously neglected land.

Hackney council officially adopted the ‘Right to Grow’ initiative in March, allowing residents to transform unused and unloved public spaces into community gardens and food-growing hubs.

The scheme aims to combat food insecurity and address the climate emergency while simultaneously creating an environment where locals can come together and enhance their growing skills.

‘Right to Grow’ and associated movement ‘Time to Grow’ coordinator, Deba Salim, said: “We’re on a mission to educate and knowledge share.

“It’s only a few generations before that we were more connected to the land and more dependent on our labour with the land.”

Right to Grow’s biggest landmark in Hackney is the Garden of Earthly Delights – a space dedicated to community events, workshops, and growing.

Here, garden volunteers throw their all into educating others about cultivation and green space significance, creating a community that recognises the importance of nurturing land.
