WATCH: Hackney mosaic scheme under threat from redevelopment plans

The founder of a mosaic project is campaigning to keep her space in a Hackney park, after the council confirmed its redevelopment plans are going ahead.

The Hackney Mosaic Project, a community support group founded by Tessa Hunkin in 2011, was invited by Hackney Council to occupy the unused sports pavilion in Hackney Downs in 2012.

Now, the group has launched a petition to remain in the park, arguing the council’s plans for a new pavilion do not provide enough space for the group’s materials or larger mosaics, and would force it to relocate.

Councillor Jacob Cable, from Hackney Council cabinet, said revised redevelopment plans will be published in the next few months. He said the group will continue to have the opportunity to hire space in the venue.
