WATCH: The search for a ‘UK first’ rare fungi in Epping Forest

Two mushroom researchers have discovered an incredibly rare species of fungi in Epping Forest – not in the area’s dense woodland but next to a main road.

Geoffrey Kibby and Mario Tortelli – the researchers who made the discovery – have known about the location of the fungi for years but were unable to identify its status as part of the super rare species, ‘Russula Blumiana’, until they recently examined it through DNA sequencing.

Elliot Rose for the North East Londoner interviewed Geoffrey and Mario and went on an expedition to the spot where it was discovered, learning about the incredible variety of London’s mushroom kingdom along the way.
