‘Yeah babe, choirs are cool now’: vocal group gets standing ovation at sell-out Hackney show

An acappella group impressed audiences at Hackney’s EartH with a set billed as ‘equal parts chaos and world-class singing’ on 7 December.

ChoirCo’s matinee and evening performances at the Dalston venue featured an eclectic setlist, culminating in an energetic Pitbull medley.

Musical numbers were shared between the women’s, mixed and queer ensembles, which together form the 150-strong organisation.

Following the show, ChoirCo founder and director Erin McCullough said: “People tend to associate the word ‘choir’ with stuffiness or music that’s inaccessible, but it can be so much more than that.

“I hope audiences took away a new definition of the word.”

The Pitbull sequence was among the show’s biggest crowd pleasers, according to QueerCo soloist Ella Monck.

She said: “The energy on stage during those group medleys is always electric, and it’s so fun bringing the audience in on that joy.”

Established in 2021, in what McCullough described as a post-Covid experiment, ChoirCo has made significant inroads into the choral scene and beyond.

That growth has included vocal session work for the film and advertising industries, a collaboration with Andrew Lloyd Webber and a category win at the 2025 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards.

For McCullough, the achievements were a byproduct of a safe and inclusive rehearsal space that allows members to enjoy themselves.

Monck auditioned for ChoirCo in 2023 during a period when many of her friends were moving out of London.

She said: “I was feeling quite lonely, so my best friend suggested ChoirCo for its wonderful community.”

Monck added that the sense of connection was key to sounding good on stage.

Asked what was next for ChoirCo, McCullough said: “I’m manifesting a Glastonbury set.”

In the nearer future, the group is set to return to the stage in September 2026 with a ‘greatest hits’ season, which includes another Christmastime show at EartH to mark the group’s five-year anniversary.
