St James’s Church takes centre stage in Bridgerton

Scenes from the hit Netflix show Bridgerton have been filmed in a North East London church.

St James’s Church, in Piccadilly, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and completed in 1684, was used in the second season to film one of the most iconic scenes – the wedding between Anthony Bridgerton and Edwina Sharma – which ended in the latter leaving her groom at the altar after he was found to be in love with her sister, Kate.

On 26 February, Netflix released the second part of the fourth season of Bridgerton, the Regency-era romantic drama produced by Shondaland set mainly in London.

Set in Regency England, the production chose to shoot most of the scenes in the United Kingdom, showcasing historic buildings and iconic neighbourhoods in the British capital, which have dazzled Londoners and tourists alike.

“Bridgerton takes us back in time,” said one tourist. “It reminds us that gallantry is not something outdated, like those values that almost make you want to go back to that era.”

Another visitor said: “Walking through these streets makes you feel like you’ve really stepped back into the Regency era.

“Here, the values of courtesy and gallantry still seem alive.”

A fellow tourist said: “Every scene in the series reminds us of the importance of small gestures: a bow, a kind word, a respectful smile. It’s a rare pleasure in today’s world.”

Both residents and tourists have pointed out that the production’s success cannot be explained solely by the visual impact of princely costumes and romantic settings.

Rather, a recurring theme emerges from the testimonies gathered: the perception of a return to traditional values such as refinement, courtesy and gallantry.
