A summer of good performances from England cricketer Dan Lawrence is helping to inspire youngsters at the London cricket club where he first learned to play.
The 29-year-old has recently impressed during England’s Test series against Pakistan, scoring a half-century in every match and strengthening his case for a regular place in the team’s batting line-up.
Lawrence was born in Whipps Cross and grew up playing his cricket at Chingford Cricket Club (Chingford CC) in northeast London. He has kept his ties to the club during his rise to the top but also has a strong family link – his father Mark is the groundsman.
Chingford CC spokesperson Stephen Thorpe said the England player is a powerful inspiration to the club’s youngsters, and often donates cricket clothing and equipment.
Thorpe said: “Dan’s story is a wonderful example of why grassroots cricket matters.
“His journey provides inspiration for every junior at Chingford and demonstrates where talent, opportunity, dedication and the support of a cricketing community can lead.”
Lawrence’s cricketing excellence was clear early on during his time at Chingford. He made his first senior appearance for the club’s Sunday side aged just eight. He went on to make his First XI league debut aged 14, often opening the batting against far older opponents.
The versatility of Lawrence’s game was recently on full display against Pakistan as he batted superbly, bowled off-spin, and took a spectacular diving catch at fourth slip. The club are proud to say this was developed during his time at Chingford.
Thorpe said: “His batting ability was exceptional from a young age, while his natural cricketing instincts enabled him to contribute in every area of the game.
“The batting, bowling and fielding qualities now being displayed for England are an extension of the all-round talent that was apparent throughout his development.”
The club often celebrates Lawrence’s successes on its social media channels, and its Facebook profile describes itself as: “Where England’s Dan Lawrence learned his trade!”
Lawrence has recently returned to the England Cricket test side after a less successful stint as a makeshift opening batsman back in 2021.
Since being chosen by interim head coach Marcus Trescothick in August, Lawrence has flourished under new captain Joe Root at number six in the batting order, a spot left vacant by the retirement of former captain Ben Stokes.
Lawrence scored a half-century in every test of the three-match series against Pakistan, including a top-scoring 54 (70) in the second innings of the second test on a challenging, bowler-friendly pitch at Lord’s cricket ground.
After these solid batting performances and some important part-time spin bowling, Lawrence is the critics’ favourite to solidify his position at number six for England Cricket’s winter test series against South Africa.
Speaking about Lawrence’s recent success for the England test team, Thorpe said: “We are immensely proud that someone who started playing cricket at our club as a young boy has gone on to represent England.”
