WATCH: Oldest weightlifting club in London faces eviction

Tower Hamlets council is planning the eviction of Bethnal Green Weightlifting Club for October next year.

Bethnal Green Weightlifting Club (BGWLC) was established in 1926 and provides a space for London’s lifting community to exercise their sport.

Powerlifters and weightlifters from all levels and ages come here to train and celebrate their accomplishments with fellow lifters and passionate coaches.

BGWLC received the first notice in September 2024 asking to vacate the building by the end of January 2025.

Upon a Freedom of Information request, Tower Hamlets council said that they were considering plans for the former Professional Development Centre (PDC) and its wider site.

Weightlifting coach Mick Roach explained that the club provided gym classes for PDC students until 2012.

The PDC and the gym are in separate buildings with separate entrances and a car park dividing the two buildings.

The council said that no decisions have been made on options for this site.

The almost 100-year-old club fought the notice with the help of its tight-knit community and received support from lifters from all around the world.

Additionally, BGWLC started a petition and is collecting signatures.
