‘On the stage there are no friends’ – Razma on facing Soutar

Madars Razma says he would rather face close friend Alan Soutar than Gian van Veen in the next round of the World Darts Championship.

Razma reached the third round for a third consecutive year after a 3–1 win over debutant Darren Beveridge at Alexandra Palace, producing a composed performance to extend his stay at the tournament.

Despite his close relationship with Soutar, Razma said he does not believe it would get in the way of his campaign in London after the Christmas break, insisting he can separate friendship from competition.

Razma said: “Alan and Darius [Labanauskas] are my best friends on tour, but on the stage, there are no friends.

“I’m still in the race.”

The draw for the next round will be decided later on Monday in the opening match of the evening session at Alexandra Palace, with Gian van Veen the short-priced favourite to progress and set up a meeting with the Latvian.

The 37-year-old moved up to 45th in the world rankings following his victory over Beveridge, overtaking Mickey Mansell, and said the result reflected the work he has put into his game in recent months.

Razma said facing someone he regularly practises with would be mentally easier than playing Van Veen, describing the Dutchman as a fast player whose pace can be challenging to control on the World Championship stage.

The familiarity of a potential clash with Soutar could work in either player’s favour, particularly when both players understand each other’s tendencies, strengths and approach to preparation.

The Latvian added that the build-up to his match against Beveridge had been emotional after receiving a message of support from his son shortly before going on stage.

Off the oche, Razma will return home to Latvia for Christmas ahead of the next round, where he plans to balance family time with continued practice.

He said: “I will practise at home and also enjoy Christmas with my family.

“This is my chance, and I will be ready when I come back.”
