Amateur London boxing club secures major investment to transform facilities for young members

Repton Boxing Club, based in Bethnal Green, has received funding to help create new state-of-the-art facilities.

Founded over 130 years ago, ‘The Repton’ has produced hundreds of boxing champions, including seven world champions and an Olympic gold medallist, Audley Harrison.

The new investment – from the Government and the Powerday Foundation – will fund a complete renovation of the club’s changing rooms, showers and youth meeting spaces, and allow 100 new young members from ages eight to 18 to join.

David Robinson, chairman of the Repton Boxing club, described his gratitude for the investment by saying it will provide “a safe youth meeting space that the young people of Tower Hamlets truly deserve”.

The Government has funded their part of the investment through the Better Youth Spaces programme, a £30.5m capital grants initiative, that is administered by Social Investment Business.

The aim of the programme is to fund small-scale, capital projects that will help under-served communities in the UK better support the young people in their care.

Nick Temple, CEO of Social Investment Business, said: “We are excited to be partnering with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to support youth services in priority areas in England and create better youth spaces for young people.”

The Powerday Foundation – the charitable arm of the London-based waste and recycling company – will deliver the additional funding for the club.

The foundation, created in 2011, hopes to help improve young Londoners’ lives through sports, education, and employment opportunities.

CEO Edward Crossan said: “This latest project will enhance Repton’s facilities and provide a safe environment to enjoy sport and social engagement.

“We’re excited to see more young boxers benefit from the club’s incredible facilities and coaching, and look forward to seeing more future champions.”
