A male cyclist in his 20s is in a critical condition in hospital following a hit and run incident at the Roman Road and Grove Road junction in Bow.
At around 6:15am on Sunday June 28th, emergency services responded to reports of a collision between a Lime Bike cyclist and a white BMW.
Off-duty police officers, who were on their way into work, performed emergency first aid on the cyclist before the London Ambulance Service took him to hospital.
The BMW was later recovered nearby on Three Colts Lane and a 35-year-old man was arrested in the Tower Hamlets area on the same day, on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene.
The suspect remains in police custody and enquires continue.
Mehulkumar Patel, owner of Jenny’s Food & Wine convenience store, captured the incident on CCTV and shared his concerns about dangerous driving in the area.
“A white car hit the cyclist really hard, and I could see the cyclist go flying onto the other side of the road,” Patel said.
Margaret Holmes, 26, from Bethnal Green, witnessed the scene of the incident whilst on her morning run.
“It looked really serious – the police cordoned off the whole junction, including the pavements,” she said.
“I also saw the Lime Bike in the road – it was completely wrecked and missing its wheel.”
A Metropolitan Police spokesman has confirmed an investigation is being led by its Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
Anyone with dash-cam footage or information that could help officers is being asked to contact police on 101, quoting CAD 2088/28JUN26.
