A South Asian Heritage Month event at the Brady Arts & Community Centre in Tower Hamlets on 5 July brought together cultural performance and women’s health awareness, with organisers using the event to celebrate Bangladeshi heritage and promote support for women.
Led by GloWomen founder and CEO Snigdha Misty, the fair focused on women’s wellbeing, with discussions around menopause, postnatal depression, cervical cancer and wider health issues.
The event also celebrated Bangladeshi culture through folk song and references to Kazi Nazrul Islam, the Bengali poet and musician whose work remains central to Bengali cultural identity.
Local business owner Janefar Sarwar said South Asian Heritage Month was important because younger generations in the UK do not always know the traditions and culture of their communities.
Sarwar said the month should be about more than celebration, adding that South Asian women should support each other and show “what South Asian women can do”.
