An amateur dance company put on their second showcase at Sadler’s Wells theatre last week, featuring the popular style of heels dancing – making dreams a reality for many.
The showcase, which took place on the 27th November at Sadler’s Wells‘ Lilian Baylis theatre, followed the success of the company’s first performance in April earlier this year.
The company was set up by Ukrainian dancer, teacher, and choreographer, Yuliia Palaida, and gives dancers the opportunity to fulfil their childhood dreams of performing live on stage.
Palaida, 29, said: “When I was growing as a dancer and as a person, I really lacked some opportunities that I wanted, I didn’t have a lot of them.
“I don’t like to wait for opportunities, I like to create them – for myself and all the people who’s entering my world.”
The showcase primarily featured heels dancing, as most of the company’s members joined after attending Palaida’s heels classes at institutions like Pineapple Dance Studios, but there were also performances in contemporary and commercial dance styles too.
Heels dancing, where dancers perform in stilettos, has gained huge popularity in the 21st century thanks to the rise of social media and through pop stars like Beyoncé showcasing the style in their music videos.
The company is made up of 27 women covering a range of ages and abilities, and there’s no audition process required, just a passion and commitment for dancing.
Palaida set up a fundraiser in September to help support the company and hopes to offer more live performances next year.
