David Munyua believes darts can unite Africa and calls on PDC to take the sport to the continent

Kenyan darts player and full-time vet David Munyua says the sport can unite Africa after his life-changing World Championship debut ended in defeat.

Munyua’s first appearance on darts’ biggest stage came to an end with a 3–0 loss, but he says the experience has given him a platform to push the sport across Africa.

Away from the continent for the first time, Munyua said his appearance at Alexandra Palace could change perceptions of darts across Africa after becoming the first Kenyan player to reach the last 32.

He asked: “If Munyua is doing it, why not them?

“There is nothing that can unite Africa like sport and the energy that we can put into this is different.”

Munyua works full-time as a veterinarian in Kenya, treating both pets and livestock, and says balancing his career with darts has required sacrifice and discipline.

Munyua believes darts can offer opportunity and purpose to young people across the continent, particularly in eastern Africa, where he hopes to inspire future generations.

The darts player said he was pleased with the support he received from Kenyan president William Ruto and praised the team around him for helping him reach the World Championship stage.

Munyua described his World Championship appearance as a turning point not just for himself, but for darts players across Africa, saying his debut had already shifted attitudes back home.

The 30-year-old said: “This is a life-changing moment for myself, my friends and darts players across Africa.”

The Kenyan also issued a direct call to the sport’s organisers, urging greater engagement with African players and venues going forward.

He said: “I challenge the PDC to bring this sport to Africa and bring these players to Africa.”

Determined that his first appearance on the world stage will not be his last, Munyua remains committed to returning stronger and helping grow darts across the continent.

Munyua said: “I will be back and next time will be better, as it will not be my first.”
