A chess charity has launched a community engagement project in Old Spitalfields Market, inviting people to sit down and play the game in the historic venue.
Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC) has launched its summer programme, ‘Chess N Chill’, which runs for two hours each Thursday evening, lasting until September.
The charity has supported 2,700 UK state schools with chess lessons, clubs, equipment, and training since it was founded in 2009.
London Coordinator for CSC Matt Piper said: “Running the event, it’s been lovely to see so many people take part.
“We’ve been expanding really quickly recently, thanks to the interest in chess with the Queen’s Gambit and the success of chess as an online game.”
In July, the charity are hosting their annual event, ChessFest, in Trafalgar Square, where they are hoping to surpass last year’s attendance of 23,000, with free lessons from grandmasters available.
